The fish it will be with are:
3 female black mollies
1 neon tetra
4 cardinal tetra
1 sucker fish (I KNOW THEY CAN GET BIG, PLEASE DO NOT LECTURE ME ON THIER SIZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
The plants in the tank are:
1 small java fern
1 large umbrella plant
1 very small umbrella plant
1 unknown plant (medium size)
It also contains a medium sized piece of drift wood and a small stone for the fish to swim through.
****All my fish seem to be doing very well and i have had them for about 2 months and would wait till the summer to get thje betta.
Is it a good choice to get a betta for my tank?
What color do you think would look best?
I want a betta in my 12 gallon community tank, does this sound like a good set-up?
Yes, your betta should get on fine with these tankmates as long as the neon/cardinals aren't too small. I know you don't want a lecture about the pleco, as you're aware that it will outgrow your tank, but you should find it a new home before you get your betta to lighten your bioload. Otherwise your tank will be over-crowded.
Reply:that is a fine set up
Reply:that sounds good, just make sure with your mollies and tetras they aren't TOO small because some bettas would find them very tasty if they were very small, but other bettas are more peaceful and wouldn't care about them.
it's all about the fish's personalities, really, but that sounds good!
as for color, you have a variety of color in there already with the black mollies and neon tetra, i have a red betta with two blue gouramis and a catfish and the betta really stands out, but i think the blue and purple ones are the prettiest.
Reply:When I had tanks I always had a betta in it. Seems to me that as long as there isn't any crowding and there aren't any other aggressive fish everyone gets along. I had a betta in a ten gallon with a bunch of guppies, and I had another in a 29 gal with a bunch of typical tropical fish. The betta loved having the space and it lived forever. Good luck
Reply:I just bought a Beta he's red white and blue - looks pretty damned patriotic if you ask me. I don't know though about putting one in with other fish - they seam to attack anything that moves. You could try putting one in the tank in a large clear plastic bag and see how he reacts to the other fish.
Reply:Tetras and mollies prefer completely opposite water conditions. The tetras, especially neons, wouldn't last long in molly conditions. The betta should be fine though.
Reply:well, i wont lecture you on the size of your sucker fish (by the way, please call it a pleco, the name sucker fish is TOTALLY wrong) but what do you plan to do with it? until you get rid of it, you cannot put a betta in there.
Reply:sounds like a pretty good combination to me
Reply:The only problem I see with it is that cardinal tetras are finnippers. bettas have a lot of finnage and may be bothered. The neon will not nip though. Cardinals are evil neon cousins. Anyway, this should be fine, just watch out for the nipping. And obviously you are already overcrowded, so you will need to upgrade.
Reply:well i have five mollies of assorted colors, 1 pleco (sucker fish) and a betta. but i also had 7 tetra and they all got eaten and i think that they were eaten by the betta. so good luck, i wouldn't advise getting the betta w/ the tetra, but if you don't have the tetra in the summer then go for the betta, they're so pretty. i like the one's with the blue body and the red flowy fins. hope i helped.
